What the Hugo version of Unreal Archives processes, stores, and deliberately leaves alone.
Who we are
Unreal Archives is an independently maintained preservation site available at unrealarchives.com.
Information processed when you visit
The public archive is generated as a predominantly static website. It does not currently provide active user accounts, accept new comments, use Gravatar, permit visitor uploads, or run advertising scripts.
As with most websites, the hosting infrastructure may temporarily process standard request information such as your IP address, requested URL, timestamp, browser user-agent, and response status. This information is used only to deliver the site, diagnose failures, prevent abuse, and maintain security. It is not sold or used to build advertising profiles.
Cookies
The site uses a small consent preference cookie named ua_cookie_consent so it can remember whether you accepted or rejected optional cookies.
If optional cookies are accepted and you click the animated Krall character in the header, the site may save ua_krall_clicked. This prevents its introductory speech bubbles from repeatedly appearing. Both preferences expire after approximately 360 days. The character’s sound can be played without accepting optional cookies; in that case the click is not remembered.
If optional cookies are accepted and you rate a campaign, the site saves an anonymous first-party cookie named ua_voter. It contains a random identifier used only to prevent repeated votes and to let you revise your rating. The server stores only a keyed, irreversible representation of that identifier alongside the rating; it does not attach a name, account, or permanently retained IP address. The cookie expires after approximately 360 days. Ratings cannot be submitted without optional-cookie consent, but existing aggregate ratings remain visible.
The current static site does not set WordPress login, comment, editor, or Gravatar cookies.
Audience measurement
The site uses a self-hosted Plausible Analytics installation at analytics.whisperingland.com to understand aggregate page traffic and useful interactions. Plausible is configured as privacy-friendly, cookie-free measurement and does not create a visitor profile on this site. It may process ordinary request information long enough to calculate aggregate statistics.
Google Tag Manager container GTM-K2XTCL is also retained for continuity with the historical site’s Google Analytics reporting. Google scripts are not requested unless you accept optional cookies. When enabled, Google may receive page and interaction information and may set or read analytics cookies according to Google’s own policies. Rejecting optional cookies leaves Google tracking disabled while preserving full access to the archive and downloads.
Measured interactions can include campaign and news links, carousel controls, anniversaries, gallery use, the Krall character, and download links. These events describe the page element used and are not joined to an Unreal Archives account or submitted rating.
Historical content
The archive may display historical public comments and author names that appeared on the former WordPress site. Private WordPress account records, email addresses, IP addresses, browser details, passwords, sessions, and raw voting logs were not imported into the new site. Only historical aggregate rating totals were preserved.
Downloads and external links
Downloading a file creates an ordinary web-server request and increments that file’s aggregate download counter. To avoid counting a browser’s range requests or immediate retries as separate downloads, the server temporarily compares the requesting IP address and file in memory for a short period. This information is not written to the counter database and no visitor-level download history or download cookie is created. Pages may link to external websites; those sites operate under their own privacy policies when you visit them.
